Air-to-air Photography, photographing aircraft in the air using another aircraft as a platform requires special skills and experience, as the photo platform and target aircraft often fly low level while under moderate to high G-forces. Depending on the type of aircraft used, Mike will be positioned in the rear, sitting sideways while the aircraft manoeuvres through the sky.
With propeller aircraft and helicopters a slow shutter speed must be used to show blur on the rotors making air-to-air photography even more challenging.
Mike's air-to-air photography is used for a variety of purposes, including commercial, fundraising and advertising use.
Recent projects: Both the Essex and Hertfordshire air ambulances were photographed from a third helicopter to show the two aircraft in flight together and separately. Mike has worked for the Essex Air Ambulance Trust for the last four years. Starting with ground to air photographs and now having had two opportunities to photograph the helicopters in the air. For a London based construction company Mike was flown over central London to photograph several projects including buildings in the city and docklands.
Experience: Mike has photographed helicopters for the last four years. This has included air to air photography, ground to air and static images. Also portraits of the crew and celebrity visitors to the airfield.
